Any tips for how someone with mild bipolar can handle sleep problems?
I have what I call mild bipolar, meaning that I don't get hypomanic. I mostly go between being depressed (or severely depressed) and feeling normal.
I have suffered from sleeping problems my whole life. I've tried everything, from reading before bed, to relaxation techniques, to avoiding caffeine, to exercising. If any of these methods work, they only work occasionally. Nothing is ever for sure. I could sleep okay one night, and horribly the next. But one thing is certain. I NEVER get enough sleep during the week. I have to wake up at 6am to go to work and I am ALWAYS tired when I wake up (though this ranges from extremely exhausted to just plain tired). Sleep aids work sometimes (sometimes they seem to have the opposite effect), but I always feel groggy in the morning when I take them.
Any advice?
I have bipolar 2 and struggle with sleep issues as well. I just started taking two benadryl every night and that seemed to help, but not always. I recently made some changes to my diet that have helped greatly. I wasn't eating all that well before and I switched to eating mainly healthy food and making sure that I am getting enough fruits, veggies and fiber. I also started taking Omega-3 capsules. Ever since I made the change, my sleep has improved dramatically. I'm not saying that it's going to work for you, but it's something to look at.
Edit: This is in response to the person who suggested Lamictal. Lamictal is an excellent mood stabilizer, I've been on it for 2 years. But in my experience it can keep me up at night. A psychiatrist also told me that this is a side effect. You might want to check your medications that you take too, they might be effecting your sleep.
