myths bipolar disorder
Where did this myth come from? Why do people still believe it?
There is a myth that insane, crazy, psychotic, or mentally ill (pick your word of choice) people do not know or recognize that there is something wrong with them. Some people even reason that if you wonder that you're insane, it means that you aren't. Some information from my psychology classes, however, differs on this. There are schizophrenics who realize that they are ill and are terrified. I also know of a person with bipolar disorder who says that she can recognize when she's having a manic/psychotic episode. Where did the myth come from, and why is it prevelent?
I am not sayin g that mentally ill people should have the right to judge whether they are ill or not. I'm just combatting the stereotype that they are always in denial.
Lots of those people out there who others call crazy are not really crazy---they are just different than me and you. I know several who are schizophrenics but they sure are NOT terrified.
